As the Match.com rape trial drew to a close today and Jason Lawrance was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, the trial judge Gregory Dickinson expressed grave concerns for the safety of women on Match.com and other online sites.
Says Judge Dickinson ‘I would like to see if lessons can be learned from the use of such sites’ and he called for prosecutors to examine the standards of supervision on online sites.
Lawrance, a 17 stone former boxer and rugby coach, was found guilty of the rape of 5 women he met on the Match.com site, plus the attempted rape of 1 more and a sexual assault of a further woman. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and the judge insisted that he must serve a minimum of 12.5 years before he could be considered for parole.
